ACTING NEW YORK

What is Acting in New York ?

Acting New York is the work of an actor or Actress , a person in theatre, film, or any other storytelling medium who tells the story by portraying a character and, usually, speaking or singing the written text or play. From the Latin word tin word tin word meaning "to do", this is precisely what acting is. In acting, an actor suppresses or augments aspects of their personality in order to reveal the actions and motivations of the character for particular moments in time. The actor is said to be "assuming the role" of another, usually for the benefit of an audience, but also because it can bring one a sense of artistic satisfaction. Actors are generally expected to possess a number of skills, including good vocal projection, clarity of speech, physical expressiveness, a good sense of perspective, emotional availability, a well developed imagination, the ability to analyze and understand dramatic text, and the ability to emulate or generate emotional and physical conditions. Well-rounded actors are often also skilled in singing, dancing, emotional expressiveness, imitating dialects and accents, improvisation, observation and emulation, mime, stage combat, and performing classical texts such as Shakespeare. Many actors train at length in special programs or colleges to develop these skills, which have a wide range of different artistic philosophies and processes. Modern pioneers in the area of acting have included Mani Madhava Chakyar, Konstantin Stanislavski, Jerzy Grotowski, Lee Strasberg, Uta Hagen, Stella Adler, Michael Chekhov, Viola Spolin, Sanford Meisner, Bertolt Brecht, and Maria Ouspenskaya.

What is Method Acting ?

Method acting, or as it is sometimes simply known, the Method, is a technique used by actors. Method acting is thought to have revolutionized acting as we known it today. It is the antithesis of the wooden actor and uses techniques such as sense and memory to achieve realism in acting. Actors who use the Method rely on using their own emotions from their past in order to bring new depth to a part.

Method acting is thought of as an American form of acting, but it was a Russian theatre director named Konstantin Stanislavski who wrote books on the subject in the 1930s. Around the same time, one of Stanislavski’s students, Richard Boleslawsky, opened an acting school in New York. Boleslawsky began teaching Stanislavski’s basic principles of acting.

In the 1940s and 50s, method acting was popularized and taught at the legendary Actors' Studio in New York City by famed acting teacher Lee Strasberg. Another school in New York, called the Actors' Group, also taught the method under the coaching of Stella Adler. Acting students came from far and wide to learn this new technique.

Popularity of the Method grew with the work of actors such as Marlon Brando and James Dean. Their style of acting, or non-acting, was considered a breakthrough in the acting world. Compared to old style actors such as Clark Gable, theirs was an acting of previously unseen raw emotion and sensitivity. Other famous actors who have studied the Method are Al Pacino, Paul Newman and Robert DeNiro.

Method acting is thought to one of the most difficult techniques to learn. There are no technical forms or lessons that can be practiced to learn it. There are numerous versions of the Method, taught by different teachers. Most of the techniques are based on the sense or emotional memory process. The actors have to fully immerse themselves in the character in order to sense all of the experiences the character would.

Stella Adler, who taught method acting to both Marlon Brando and Robert DeNiro, studied method acting with Stanislavski. Her teaching methods involved using memories or an incident from the actor’s own life to enhance his or her acting. By doing this, actors can use real emotions in portraying their characters.

Although method acting is thought to be the most realistic of techniques it can sometimes present a minor irritation to other actors. Dustin Hoffman once went without bathing and sleeping for two days in order to immerse himself in a role. On seeing Hoffman’s condition, Laurence Olivier his co-star in the film, famously asked him, "Why don’t you just act?"

ACTORS IN NEW YORK

What is an actor in NY ?

An actor in New York city, actress, is a professional performer who acts, and / or plays a role, on screen or stage.

There are many arguments about what acting really is? Some say to be an actor is to act as someone else, others say it's being yourself on different levels.

Acting = Being: Being someone else, being yourself, being at a certain place, being at a certain time.

A professional actor is someone who can make us believe he is not acting, but actually being.

How to become an actor in New York ?

Below are some recommended steps to start or try an acting career.

Step One

Know that you are entering one of the most competitive businesses in the world. Even though you are an amateur, it is no place for amateurs. With that being said, take this trial, or new career very seriously. Be professional.

Step Two

If you live in New York, Los Angeles, London, or any other major city, then you are lucky. If you don't do your best with what you have, but consider that eventually, you'll probably have to move to a major city. However, no matter where you are, you have to start 99% the time in an acting class. Don't live in an illusion that you're skilled just because you think so, or someone else told you so. Skills and experience are very different.

Step Three

Enroll in acting class. Good actors study their entire lives. Just like a professional basketball player is practicing twice a day (no matter how great he is), same go for actors. There is always something to learn. There are many places and individuals that offer acting classes, make sure they are certified, or at least recommended by someone. Just like that a good acting teacher can help you grow, a bad one can hurt your career. Choose wisely.

Step Four

Get a headshot. It doesn't have to be a great, expensive photographer, but it needs to be a great shot. My first headshot was with a very famous photographer which worked with Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp , and Keanu Reeves, unfortunately it didn't do anything for me. I wasted a lot of money, and it wasn't a good experience or a good result.

A few years later, my girlfriend took a few pictures in the back yard with her new camera. Those picture gave me more auditions then any other professional one. So, it is not the photographer, it is the picture. Get a great one!

Step Five

Compose a résumé of all the work you have done so far. As your body of work grows, drop the less professional work (such as school plays) from your résumé. If you are just starting, and don't have any experience what so ever, then list only your training, and add hobbies (that you're good at), and other special skills. For more information how to compose an acting resume, read about our Resume tips.

Step Six

Send your headshot and résumé with a brief Cover letter to all the casting directors and agents in your area. Follow up with postcards every four to six months, updating them on your current acting projects. Always remember, you are your best promoter. No one can promote yourself better than you.

Step Seven

Read the trade papers regularly: "Backstage," "Variety," and "The Ross Reports", as well as online publications such as Actors Pages. Know what is being cast where, and send headshots and notes directly to directors and producers whenever possible, requesting auditions. Always seek new information, and also share new information with other actors. Don't be afraid that they will take the job from you. Only your lack of desire and experience can do that. If you share with other actors, they will share with you.

Step Eight

Always accept invitations to industry events and parties, and meet industry professionals whenever possible. Who you know is extremely important. Be accessible and open. Actors need to be seen at all times.

Step Nine

Believe! Believe! Believe! Don't get disappointed, depressed, or give up because things don't go your way. I got my first gig after five years of struggle. My first gig was with Steven Spielberg. I have friends that worked those entire five years, and all they really want is to work with Spielberg. A true actor never gives up.

ACTING AUDITIONS IN NEW YORK

What are NY Auditions ?

New York Auditions - Interview for actors conducted by a director or a casting director in order to determine if the actor fits the role. The actor should prepare a monologue or in most cases read from the project's sides.

Usually after a successful audition, the actor would be asked to come again for a callback.

An audition is a sample performance by an actor, singer, musician, dancer or other performing artist. It is used in the casting process to demonstrate the level and range of a performer's talent, and functions as a job interview for the performing arts. A typical audition involves the performer displaying their talent through a previously-memorized and rehearsed solo piece: for example, a monologue for actors or a song for a singer.

Some auditions involve cold reading, or performing a script that the actor is not familiar with. This is similar to many dance auditions, in which the focus is on learning new choreography, rather than showcasing prepared work.

For smaller roles in a large production, mass auditions are held at which many inexperienced or aspiring performers, most without agents or manager show up. These are popularly known as cattle calls, since the hopefuls are often kept together in one large room like a herd. American Idol is doing auditions by using this technique, since there are so many auditions.

New York Auditions Advice from Casting Directors :

Ask any casting director what matters most when an actor shows up to an audition. Most will say, "They need to be prepared." (Showing up on time can't hurt either.)

These should be obvious, but it's surprising how many actors make a bad impression with something as simple as inappropriate behavior. It can knock you out before you step into the ring. Remember: Casting directors already have the job — you don't. So you need to prove yourself to them, not the other way around.

Other suggestions we heard from CDs: Avoid unnecessary chit-chat. Don't linger in the room for too long after you read. Stay away from using most props. And avoid making physical contact with the casting director during your audition.

A feeling of desperation is another sure way not to get a callback. Never view an audition as nerve-wracking nightmare, or make it look that way. Consider each audition an opportunity: A chance to perform for an audience — albeit a small one. Or walk into the audition saying, "No matter what happens, I'll do the best I can today." Remember: The casting director is not here to judge you harshly; he or she simply wants to find the perfect person for the role. That could be you.

Actors sometimes seek out coaching for auditions, but primarily for large film/TV roles, or for admittance to an MFA program. Many believe it is worth the expense — if only for the boost in self-confidence. In last-minute emergencies, actors even resort to phone coaching, although that's not an ideal situation.

However, with or without coaching, one trap to avoid is too much preparation. Read the sides carefully but don't freeze your approach — you may be asked to change it. Longtime coach and acting teacher Craig Wallace says he never sends actors out 100 percent set for the audition. "If you're over prepared, you have no flexibility," he says. "And you don't know what 50 percent of the process is until you walk into the room.

"You can't have the piece controlling you. You have to leave room for the circumstances of where you're going to be."

New York Audition Tips !

  1. Come at least 15 minutes earlier to your cal time.
  2. Make sure not to eat at least two hours before your call time.
  3. Try not to talk with anyone in the audition room. Kindly ask them not to disturb your preparation. No, it is not rude, it is necessary.
  4. When you come into the audition, it is strongly recommended to arrive as the character. Remember that this is why you are here for. Your own persona can come out only after the casting director thanked you for coming.
  5. If you require to bring your own monologue, always choose something that feels familiar to you. Don't take inaccuracy risks when you auditioning. Leave the risks in your acting class.
  6. Choose a strong piece that don't exceed 5 minutes. A good efficient length would be 2-3 minutes.
  7. Remember that there was some action before the character begun to speak. Think what happen before your character speaks its first line. It will help you get into the character faster and most likely eliminate some disturbing butterflies.
  8. Don't rush your lines. Even if you feel you lost it. You are not a mind reader, and therefore don't know what the casting director is looking for.
  9. Many times the casting director would tell you to say your name to the camera. Sometimes this is the only thing you have to do in your audition. Don't take this thing lightly. It is the way you present yourself, even with one line that can get you the audition.
  10. BELIEVE.

NEW YORK MODELING AUDITIONS

What are NY Modeling Auditions ?

Modeling Auditions in New York are different from Acting Auditions. As a model it is all about your look. And by saying that, it is not necessary that you need to look good. There are many models that are far from looking good, but they do look interesting and can carry themselves in a very unique way.

How to start a Modeling Career in New York ?

Start by a research on auditions in your local area. Most of major model casting is done in California, New York, and Europe. Every city has a few well established modeling agencies that are affiliated with major players in the industry. Not like acting, that one can promote himself and doesn't always need an agent, a model must have an agent, If you want to start a modeling career, then you need to start auditioning for a few different agencies and see what they say. The key to success here is to pick an agent that is well known and established! Ask for their references and credentials before signing any contracts.

NY Modeling Training

Modeling might seem like an easy profession, however it is not. It is true that like in any other profession some make it without any training, but if you are really into modeling, you need to learn a few basic things. Many models don't get the job because of lack of training and modeling experience. You can be the best looking individual for the spot, but someone else with more training and experience will take it. At least get some basic training from a specialized modeling school. The industry has many standards that you need to follow when you audition for major players. If you are considering modeling as full time career then you must invest into a portfolio and schooling. Great training cost good money, but be careful in your selections there are many scams.

New York Modeling Portfolio & Resume

Unlike headshots which an actor uses, a model must go through various photo-shoots and create a modeling portfolio. Putting together a processional modeling portfolio is a MUST! A portfolio should have variety of pictures, black / white and color, different poses, and a several different looks (swimwear,  business, casual, etc.) Your portfolio is probably your most important tool that will sell you in the entertainment Industry. Remember modeling casting directors and agents will only look through your portfolio once, so you have only one chance to capture their interest. You should spend anywhere between $800-$2000 depending on the photographer. The best photographers also have awesome connections so there's a chance to be referred to a great modeling agency. All your pictures must be presented in an organized order. A modeling resume is much simpler. Just have all your current contact information, your height, size, weight, and clothing measurements. Be sure to include all the training and work you were involved in.

OPEN ACTING AUDITIONS IN NEW YORK

What are Open Auditions in New York ?

New York Open Auditions are a form of invitations to attend a casting interview conducted by a director or a casting director. Not like scheduled Acting Auditions, an open call will usually have no screening before, such as: headshot , resume , or demo reel submissions.

Open Audition Calls most likely have a lot of more actors attending. It's first come first served kinda of thing.

Many professional actors don't like open auditions as much as schedule auditions for many reasons. The wait time is usually much longer, the crowed is usually an amateur one.

There are however many professional productions that use open auditions calls because they have to go into production very quick. Those productions are usually theatre shows and musicals like Broadway productions.

New York Open Audition Tips !

  • Show up Early - Try to get there as early as you can. Casting directors are usually fresh in the early stage, and get very anxious in the mid to late stages.
  • While you Wait - Relax, allow yourself to loosen up and prepare.
  • Don't be loud - Try to keep it down while waiting for your turn to audition. Others are trying to focus on their audition and so should you. You don't want to be remembered as anything but a good performer.
  • Come prepared - Production offices are always short on pens, sides and so on. Bring your own.

Mr. Modica co-taught with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse and was one of the few teachers chosen by Meisner to carry on his work. Mr. Modica’s commitment to truth within the work is as unwavering as is his belief in and respect for the uniqueness of each individual actor. From the reality of the business side to the importance of their technique and craft I coach my clients to be prepared for any situation they may come upon and to remain "living truthfully under imaginary circumstances" at all times. I do not teach a specific method but rather use all the methods to make my clients as good as their potential allows. "Craig is the best secret weapon an actor can have." If you love improv, but feel constrained to shallow scenes in comic classes, then this class is a good fit. If you're a traditional actor, this class will make your work more spontaneous and natural. Unlike most improv, we won't focus on witty exchanges of dialogue. Instead, we'll focus on emotional relationships, character development, group mind, stage presence, realism, and staying in the moment. With a samll class size of 12, each student will receive individual attention. Every performer works differently, and the class is designed to recognize and expand each student's unique abilities.

JOIN THE FIGHT!!!

We are here to fight for you, but we can't do it alone. We need you to fight with us. Stop paying to all online services that take your money. Even if it is a FREE trial, or only $1 a month.  The truth is that most of the online services for actors and models are owned by the same people. Those people are cloning their sites (with different designs) and making you pay by spamming your Emails, or by promoting their other sites online, splitting their casting notices and audition list, so you will have to pay in a few places.

SAY ENOUGH!!!

WHY ACTORS KEEP PAYING FOR ONLINE SERVICES THAT THEIR ONLY PURPOSE IS TO TAKE YOUR MONEY?!

WHEN WILL IT STOP? THE MOMENT YOU STOP PAYING!
